Organic Sumatra "Gayo Mountain" Fair Trade Coffee
This gourmet organic coffee is grown at an altitude of approximately 1500 meters above sea level and delivers a high quality green bean. Coffee is the second highest trading commodity in the world, only slightly trailing behind oil. One would think that with coffee in such demand, like oil, that there is lots of money for those who produce it, sadly that isn't true. It takes a team effort to protect the money made from producing coffee, and this Goya Mountain region is a perfect example of how that team effort pays off. This community is extremely committed to the growth and prosperity of its coffee farmers through the PPGKO (organic community). This organization is not only organized but also highly efficient. The PPGKO has been able to accomplish many community-based projects that completely changed the quality of life for the farmers and their families, which in turn also brings you a better cup of coffee. Roads were installed that will help ease the difficulties of transporting the freshly picked beans. Wells have been dug that provide fresh, clean accessible water to the farmers. Drying beds have been built to help dry the beans on a patio so that air circulates around each bean for a more consistent drying process. The organization runs with total transparency to show that they have excellent business practices and long term standing relationships with those that they do business with. It is an honorable, efficient, and necessary organization for these farmers to be a part of. The local Gayo mountain coffee is not only organic but also very hands-on. The coffee is dehulled, sorted, bagged and loaded into containers all by hand. This ensures any unripe or damaged cherries will be removed by the inspectors and quality is assured throughout the entire process promising a beautiful cup of coffee. Some of the trees here are over 50 years old and because of great care, are still producing magnificent organic beans.
