Organic Sulawesi 'Port Icewik' Fair-Trade Coffee
Grown in the most remote coffee growing regions on the planet, just getting to this coffee plot in the jungle takes at least 4 days from the nearest city! Motorcycle, horseback, and finally trekking through the deep jungle forest will lead you to coffee trees that are the true essence of nature. These trees typically produce not only small beans, but also a small yield, less than 150 kilos per acre, which means that there are extremely limited quantities. This Port Icewik gourmet coffee is grown under a blanket of virgin jungle, natures umbrella if you will, that protects the coffee trees and makes coffee extremely sustainable in this remote area. This coffee has been genetically tested, and we have found that the trees are direct descendants of the original cultivated trees in Yemen. A Dutchman named Icewik, who risked his life to deliver the crop to the island of Sulawesi, single-handedly took these trees from Java. After being planted on what must have been at the time a small farm; the jungle soon took over, and the farm was deserted. However, in this secret garden, the unattended trees continued to grow and mature over 400 years. Amazingly, a Dutch coffee broker rediscovered them under the jungle canopy, when the locals mentioned these 20ft tall coffee trees buried deep within the bush. Sulawesi Port Icewik is a crown jewel of all coffees; nothing even comes close to this rare discovery. Sulawesi Port Icewik beans are so rare and coveted, that we are in strict agreement with our broker to not disclose location specifics about this coffee. This is a wild-crafted coffee that is a precious commodity to the locals that protect it and to those of us lucky enough to acquire this treasured coffee. Port Icewik promises to deliver a full-bodied coffee with a cedar pine essence and cinnamon undertones. Low acidity and a long spicy finish give this exotic complex blend an original flavor. Because this plot of land is heavily guarded with security for protection, Port Icewik beans are hand picked by select locals who actually climb into the 20-foot trees to pick ripe cherries. This also ensures only the ripest cherries are picked making for a perfect cup. During processing, this coffee is kept completely separate from any other Sulawesi bean, as only 300-600 bags of this rare gem can be produced yearly. Port Icewik is like finding a needle in a haystack; centuries of circumstance and experience went into this cup. There is nothing like Sulawesi Port Icewik coffee in the world, nothing. |
